Leah Heilman Schanke is a children's book writer whose heritage descends from three continents, Africa, Europe and North America. With an interest in U.S. history and particularly stories of social justice, she is inspired by her African-American and Jewish heritage to write narrative non-fiction and historical fiction books for children.
Her picture book biography of a Harlem Renaissance poet was a winner in the 2017 KidLit College Picture Book Contest. For two consecutive years, 2013 and 2014, she was a finalist in the PNWA Literary Contest in the children’s book category.
In 2014 the Children's Book Academy awarded her a full Andrea Davis Pinkney Merit Scholarship. She has also studied with the Storyteller Academy and is an associate member of SCBWI.
